State officials have ruled in favor of a new Mecklenburg County building code policy designed to safeguard against potential utility transformer explosions.
County officials had mandated revised standards this year on where the equipment could be installed. The policy also affects existing projects countywide where the electrical transformers might pose an imminent danger.
Local industry lobby group Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition had appealed the policy as too restrictive during two days of hearings this week before the N.C. Building Code Council. Others in the real estate community decried the concerns as unrealistic, especially since officials couldn’t cite a case in the country where a transformer exploded.
REBIC argued the requirements on the placement of transformers could be impossible for some new construction, especially in high-density areas. – Charlotte Business Journal
